homemade florescent hood

rudyyj Aug 27, 2004 08:55 AM

i came up with an idea last night that i just needed to share cause it worked out so well!!!!

use rain gutter to make a hood.

get a length of raingutter and cut it to length, I made a 3' so i cut it about 3'3" or so.
I purchesed a strip light from home depot.
i used a old power cord from a some castoff computer equiptment
two gutter endcaps
can of spraypaint

-figure out where you desire to have the power cord attach and drill hole to fit cord thru
-attach endcaps with rivets
-paint
-rivet strip light inside gutter-it fits perfectly!
-pass cord thru hole
-wire up light
done!!!
3'strip light for about $17

I was trying to think of a way to make a bunch of small fixtures that would allow me to run those spiral-twist, self-ballasted flourescents. Those lights produce a small amount of UVB and a slightly greater amount of UVA.

For space efficiency and to increase the surface area of light directed towards the cages I want to have them installed horizontally.

Your rain gutter idea should be perfect. Thanks for sharing, you never know when someone is struggling with something you already have figured out.
