First litter of mice...info needed

Fullbodytwitch Aug 27, 2004 09:44 AM

I currently have 1.3 My first female had her first litter on the 23rd of this month. I was hoping to find a site with more info on feeder mice rather than pet mice. All the ones I have found are for people who breed mice for the love of mice, which is obviously not why I am doing so; it is for the love of snakes.

Right now, I have my female and her litter in a separate cage from the others. I think next time I will just move the male, but again I was going on the advice of the mice keepers. I would love any advice and suggestions. I don’t know if it really matters or not??

It’s been an interesting experience with keeping the mice. I dont mind it at all. The new borns are UGLY!

Also, this is an odd and somewhat stupid question, but Ill ask anyway. My mice are in the bathroom off my bedroom, my snakes are in my bedroom. They have been a little more active lately, is it possible they can scent the mice from that far away? I am sure to wash my hands before interaction of course, but they seem more "uppity" since I brought the mice home.

Thanks a ton!!!
Miya

Personally , i dont move anyone from my colony( male or female). Generally with mice its not the male you have to worry about eating litters. Its usually the mom after her first litter though not always the case. So i'd suggest leaving everyone in the cage in the future since it only causes undo stress that can lead to the above mentioned.

My female has done just fine with her first litter. but hell this is all new to me... so i think she did fine. How do you have everything set up? males to females?

thanks!

Mice won't do nearly as well if you move members of the group around. Getting the female back in the breeding group may end up with her being killed. That and it delays her next litter. Set up the group of 1.3 and leave them to it. Don't add or subtract members.

Thanks
It makes sense, but the people I had been talking to, flipped because they thought dad was going to eat the babies. They went through a very detailed horror story with me, and told me to move her NOW!
So I've learned my lesson!

Thanks alot!!!

I guess at some point I would wonder how many mice those people have bred. Actual experience vs hearsay. I have had various numbers of mice since the 70s. I can't think of many times that a male did that sort of thing. In fact I can think of numerous killed males, or eaten first time litters....but not dad's going on the rampage.
It will be a mess to get the breeding group back together now. And often mice will cannabalize litters.....due to stress predominantly. But it isn't a dad mouse problem.
