keeping rats in the house? Is this possible

cee4 Aug 27, 2004 01:32 PM

I am thinking about breeding my own rats again but it is too hot or too cold to do it outside. How can I breed a small colony in the house with little room and not expecting the house to smell like a zoo? Is this even possible?
I already push my limits with the pets in the house. My dh and 2 out of 4 of my kids dont care for animals that much.I had to give up my ferrets because they smelled up the house and dh complained.
BTW I do have a pet male rat from the last rat breeding fiasco though he is getting old I think he is still good for a few more breeding sessions.
I guess the biggest problem I ran into last time was waiting for 8 to 12 weanlings to grow big enough to put in the freezer.I need them to be at least 6 inches body length for it to be worth my snakes time.. Anyway sorry for the long post..maybe someone can give me some helpful hints..

You can keep rats in the house without any major odor concerns. Just clean the bins regularly. Male rats don't have a strong musky odor like male mice do, the only real smell is a faint oily smell, but you can only really smell this is you put your nose right near the rat. The major source of odor would be from dirty bedding but that is easily solved.

It really is not that odorous to keep rats, provided you keep their cages clean. I use twenty gallon-long aquariums for my rats, and they have tight screen lids. One female to a tank, and the male makes his rounds to each tank for a few weeks at a time. (wink, wink.
I included a pic of my rat colony for reference.
Rats really do not smell that bad, not anywhere near as bad as mice. I clean and bleach each tank out every 1-2 weeks, and in between I remove about half of the soiled litter (aspen chips) and it never really smells bad at all. I have them in the back hall though, for no other reason other than I do not want their cages to be visible to my snakes!
