friends snake sick

mve Jun 25, 2003 01:37 AM

I am writing this for my friend, who I told to take the snake to the vet, I just want to know how the snake will be. It has only eaten once since he got it, last week, and it is a month old. It is not eaten today, and it is blowing bubbles out of its mouth. Can it be pneumonia? What is the cause of this? Is there medication, or is the snake doomed? I do not keep snakes, I keep dart frogs, so I can't help him, but he will go to the vet this week, I hope his snake is OK.

Bubbles out of the nostrils is a sign of respiratory infection...

If he's only had it for a week and it ate once, that's fine. Many people don't even try to feed a new snake in the first week they have it.

Tell him to raise the temps to 87-95 day and night, and lower the humidity to around 30% until he can get it to the vet.

i meant that he had the snake for a month, sorry i worded that wrong. it ate once in the month he had it, but he was trying thawed fuzzies at first, and it wouldnt take them, so he tried a live fuzzy, and it ate it. but since then it came up with this illness, so it hasnt eaten this week. I will let him know about the temps and humidity. But I read somewhere that if the snake is blowing bubbles that it is pnuemonia and steam can help break up the snot if you will, also putting the head down tail up and let gravity help, do these ideas work at all?

Nope, do not raise the humidity, it is deffinetly your enemy right now. Trust me, go with what I put, it will help out. If you dont believe me, go ahead and raise the humidity, and watch the snake get worse, and probably die within a week.

it sounds to me like your friend doenst know how to keep a snake. i doubt telling him to lower the humidity as he will have no idea how to do that. sounds like irresposiblity. just my .02 no flame intended.

you are probably right. I would love to save it, but I have no room. I hope he takes it to the vet. I have given him this advice. thanks for your help.
