different foods besides crickets?

caietaro Aug 27, 2004 04:18 PM

My baby Argentine tegu is only eating crickets right now, and I want to offer him more of a variety. I got some meal worms for him but he wont touch them. I'm not sure what else I can offer him at this size? He's too small for pinkies, and too small for superworms. Medium to large crickets are about all he can handle right now size wise. I've seen wax worms for sale at some local pet stores...how nutritious are they? Any other ideas?

wax worms have no nutritionalvalue and are high in fat. try roaches, silkies and small supers. you can also offer eggs and turkey (ground turkey 93% fat free).

you might find some helpful info on my tegu page

I have heard about ground turkey a few times, thats actually what the breeder suggested I feed. I also read though that just plain ground turkey isn't all that great for them, but if its mixed with bone meal and a vitamin it can be great. However all the recipies I've seen for it have have massive amounts of turkey(since its popularly used in Zoo I guess?) like 10lbs. Does anyone know what the ratios would be on a much much smaller scale? I think pro exotics has the ratios on their site for 2.5 lbs of turkey, but that still seems like an awful lot for one baby tegu!

I use the SDZ diet which is what you described. If you take the mix and make it then what I do is put it into ice cube trays and freeze it. After it is frozen I pop the cubes out and place them into a tupperware type container. I leave them in the freezer and thaw out only what I need for feeding the following day. That way you are not constantly mixing food every day in small amounts. It is just an idea. Good luck

Hi,

I also used the SDZ diet, I made a huge batch of it, then made what I call "tegu meatballs" I would just defrost 1 or 2 at a time and meego loved those!

Good luck with the new baby
