Sounds like you have basic care down pretty good. I would dump the carpet and go for newspaper or aspen pine bedding. Is the snake a gopher snake or one of its cousins? Discribe him to us or post a picture.

I think a gopher sorry i cant get a picture of him he has almost hourglass spots on his back 1/4" with two rows of smaller spots on each side of his body the first row on each ide near his head almost make solid line then they seperate into spots. He has light sraw coloring in between and red brown spots though more a rust coloron hid head theres a sripe that goes from his jaw over his eyes and back to his jaw with small curving lines down by his mouth
