He's not a Firebelly newt...so what is he?!

CCgerbilclan Aug 27, 2004 07:21 PM

Hey everyone,

Some people dropped a newt off at my rescue today telling me that it is a firebelly newt. They gave me all of his supplies and stuff and they said that they have had him for five years in the conditions he is kept in. I took him in thinking he was a firebelly, but when I saw him today, and compared him to pictures...he doesn't look like it. For one thing, he is huge...and the top of him is brown and kind of rough. I have no idea what kind of newt he is if he isn't a firebelly...could you help me out? I have some pictures...

This this his tank...is this suitable? This is what they gave me. I think it's to small, but I want a second opinion.

Paramesotriton (warty newt).

The tank size is fine, temps should be 72 F or below.
Where is your rescue located? I know a number of people who would be intersted in the newt.

It is a warty newt (genus Paramesotriton). It is notoriously difficult to identify specific species of Paramesotritons. See:
