Tank to Pond

NomadOfTheHills Aug 27, 2004 07:47 PM

I just released my 3.5 inch easternapinted turtle I rescued last august from a boys scout camp (not bashing scouts, I am one currenty, soon to be Life )

He grew too big for his 20 gallon tank, so he is now in the pond in my backyard. I hope he will be alright. I don't have to worry about racoons becuase my cat keeps them away (He is 20 lbs, and has killed a virginia opposum)

Sorry if this is a pointless post

It's great that your turtle is in a pond now. I bet he is happy there. Congratulations on your new family member, enjoy him.

I find it hard to believe that your cat can keep away raccoons. I have seen raccoons do a number on animals two to three times their size. Having him in a pond is a great idea he will be very happy. But please watch out for you cat remember cats are domesticated animals ment to be kept inside not outside killing wild animals.

In the area I live, bobcats have been wiped out (LI NY), so my cat fills that niche. Since we moved in, our neighboors have told us how the racoon situation has changed, they used to have racoons all over, knocking over garbage and such, but not since we moved in. Also, my cat weighs about 20 pounds, and is tall as well, not just fat. Hes a fighting machine. We tried to keep him indoors but he knocks out the windows

Wow that's one big cat! My DOG is only 8lbs! Just be careful your cat doesn't decide to make a meal or toy of the turtles one day when they are basking.

Luckily my pond has an island, my turtle cant get out of it, but can bask on the island, and my cat doesnt like water

He is a really good hider! I thought he was gone, but today I saw him after watching the pond for 15 minutes, he swam across through the mud lol. Theres a lot of vegetation in the pond, and mud/leaves on the bottom, so he has been hiding haha :D

I have 3 ponds at between my house and my brothers house. This year we lost about 50 sliders/3snappers/15 pianters and 12 nortern red bellies. They developed a fungus that grew on their hind legs and tail. the fungus was thin, white and barely noticeable. I soaked them in sufla soap like I was told but put them back in the pond because I did not know that was the cause. Neither did all of the vets and knowledgeable people I asked. Later I foung out that pond fish develope certain fungi that they only get from ponds. I took all the turtles I had left and put them in a fish tank and soaked them in sulfa soap and put them back in the tank the fungus is disappearing now.I ordered 100 sliders, the ones that went dirctly into the fish tank never had a problem. I am just trying to warn you because it seems like you care about you turtle.

THanks for the heads up! What can I do to prevent this, I only have about 5 4/5 inch feeder fish (haha) in the 11 foot long pond. Is it common?

It is common. Go to your local pond supply store and look for medication for pond fish fungus. Use it as a prevention, because once your turtle gets the white on it's hind legs it will probaly not make it.
