Are you using a "set" for picture taking? They always look so natural and as if you had just come across them on a hike. Can you share any secrets of your photography? And I've never seen an ugly animal in any of your pics. But since my eyes are not so well trained with this species they all look the same to me. That's not a critisism of you or your animals but a confession from one who is unable to see the subtle differences between the differing Eastern Chain Kings. Can you help me there too?

I agree, your photography is so awesome you need to give us all lessons...

Thanks guys the secret if there is one is to snap tons of pics of the subject you want photographed. For instance this pic I just posted. I took 26 pics and maybe 3 were decent and from the 3 I choose to keep this one. So even if you think you have a great shot in there keep snapping to a minimum of 20 shots or more. Also a good camera is key as well. If you look back at some of my pics from last year they were very average until I got my Nikon Coolpix4300 . As far as using sets sometimes I do dometimes I dont. Thanks again guys.

raised bed Russian Tortoise pen. Dramatic looking for sure. It was excavating a rather deep hole in the substrate. Hope someone identifies it because it was probably either making a nest or preparing to overwinter in that hole. Yuck. Btw, I am in Louisiana. Quite a distance from you.

Keith,

I am not exacly sure which one, but it is one of the Spider Hunter or Cricket Hunter species of wasp, Either from the family Pompilidae or Sphecidae. They both nest in underground tunnels.

Pretty harmless and rather beneficial. They paralyze only spiders to use as food sources for the young in the dauber nests. Including black widows, and brown recluse spiders!!! Bust open a mud dauber nest and you will see it jammed full of paralyzed spiders and one little white dauber grub!! Used to mess with them as a kid.
