maybe my males aren't peaceful....???

maclen Aug 27, 2004 09:35 PM

okay, same thing, every night i hear them running around, but they usually are a long ways apart just sitting there when i turn on the lamp and have a look. I thought it might be just one running around, just doing its thing, but tonight I heard a little sound come out right after i heard the running. Maybe it came from a different cage or something, i have a couple new geckos(one a baby crested which i heard make a similar noise) but the noise sounded like a cat scream sort of noise, like when a cat gets into a fight with another cat... so do cresteds make these types of noises are is my imagination running wild

Cresteds will make a slightly high pitched "chirp" when physically threatened. It shouldn't sound like a cat scream, but if both animals chirp simutaneously, it could sound ditonal. The chirp sounds like a tokay call, only higher pitched and lower intensity. If you have a male and female in the same cage, then mr crestie is probably just getting his mack on. Let him groove

BUT

if you have two males then separate them

btw

i have two males, i bought them together and they have grown up together and i have never noticed any problems, and still haven't really. I've never seen them fight or chase each other, I think one might just be jumpy, I think whenever one of them moves the other one runs, because they never chase each other.

At right around 4 months of age, males may begin dropping their hemipenes (puberty) and will become aggressive toward one another. Even if they have grown up together, they will hit this stage and you should separate them for their own good.

they dropped their hemipenes probably 3 or 4 months ago, which i guess would make them around 8. still, is it a constant fact that males will fight?? because i read lots of posts of males/females and females/females fighting. maybe its just more of a bad apple scenario then it is male/male scenario Sometimes, but probably most of the time they fight because the male male thing, but still i havent observed any agression

How can you say that they aren't fighting? Your topic to the message is "maybe my males aren't peaceful." What you are hearing is them chasing each other around the cage, and the chirps/screams are more than likely the result of aggression. Also, why are you asking for help, and then, when people give you solid answers, you're saying that your animals are the exception?

Unless you want to end up with a tailess crested (or worse) you should follow the advice and seperate them asap.

In a species where males are considered to be aggressive toward one another it is your responsability to keep them seperate. It almost sounds like you just dont believe it... Now if you had a huge cage then go for it - I guess as long as each one has their own territory then you would most likely be fine... It would be like keeping two male Chameleons together. One will end up dead. And not just from fighting, but stress as well.

Just my two cents.

to aaron : i said MAYBE they aren't peaceful, i wasnt asking for help either, i was just updating my earlier post saying that i have DEFinetly had no problems and commenting that MAYBE i am having problems now. They are still getting along and one of them just sporadically runs around from time to time, but nonetheless i am going to seperate them just for you aaron.

Don't do it for me. Do it because you are a responsible pet owner. If you don't care about their well-being, leave them how they are; don't just do something because I said to.
