I have a pair of hets that I wanted to breed last yr many said wait another yr. My female is like 3 1/2 yrs old and my male like 2 . I was thinking I had some time to get weights up but im seeing people posting about starting breeding already. I havent fed them alot sometimes every week sometimes every couple or few weeks. I was going to get some frozen rats from the sept. 12 show because the rats im breeding are too small now. Do I have time to feed them? They are not thin just thought I needed to feed them. Im in North jersey if it matters so when should I put them together? I can post pics later if needed.

then you can start as early as November to as late as March, you will want to let them go to a cooling stage fore about 3 weeks before starting to put them together, after they have been cooled( only drop the temperature at night no more than 10' below your normal night time temp and about 5' lower from your normal day time temp.

Then while they are together you may try misting them with a water bottle sprayer and especially after the female sheds, watch them for a while to see what their interests are,you may have to try this during the entire breeding season till you actually whitness copulation.

Hope that helps you some.

but these are the basics that I started out with and over the years with experience you tend to fine tune your trials and errors until you find the combo that works best for you, Also keeping a daily log of the day time and night time temps help alot and keeping records of when , who what , etc bred when and how long stuff like that after a few year syou will find that nitch and everyone has their own way, this was what started for me.

Good luck, remember the females play the largest role of all, size , weight, ovulation, readiness to breed etc. you just put the simple factors into play and hope for the best.

Ok I have the male in a large rubermaid heated with a heat pad and the female in a wooden cage heated with bulb. With this setup I can lower the heatpad temp and maybe get a lower wattage buld but I cant see how I will lower the night temp because I dont use a heat source at night this time of yr. Well the males heat source stays on but the females light is on a timer and goes off at night and night temps can be low 80's.
