calcium supplements and a picky eater

jeune18 Aug 28, 2004 01:23 PM

madam helga turtlehead is a very picky eater. i can only feed her certain things and whenever i put calcium on them, she would not eat them. i was using t-rex with the red label. this guy at a pet store that i trust recommended the uro dust i think by sandfire (sorry the bottle is not with me at the moment)she seems to like it and will eat her food when it is on it but i am so afraid that there is not enough calcium in it (but at the same time it is more calcium than she was getting)
does anyone know anything about the stuff? or know of a website that talks about it in fairly simple terms. i am looking for it on the net but i keep getting shopping pages

I've never heard of any of the stuff.

I get my calcium dust/powder at Petco Usually (sorry for the store name plug).

I have t-rex calcium powder/dust and another brand I cannot think of at the moment. I put it on the crickets I give them, cause the mali's love crickets so they will take the dust that way (otherwise if I put on lettuce they won't eat).

Sorry I can't be of any major help, you could just try bee pollen to stimulate her appettite*spelling?* That might help.

well i do dust the crickets whenever i give them to her, i just don't give them that often since she is so picky. i would rather her eat her veggies like a good growing girl

See I dust the crickets every time I get them to them (one time every week since I have animals that can only eat crickets and worms). But I make sure they have some greens before they get crickets, crickets are their after dinner treat or dessert.

I would say that if you find a "treat" they go nuts for, use that. For a while, I was injecting liquid calcium from the vet into mealworms, to insure they were getting it. Eventually, I went to mixing the powdered calcium and vitamins in a baggie, and shake it up with mealworms in there. They gulp 'em down without hesitation.

Hope that helps.

Uro dust is ok for supplementing veggies but not for proper calcium amounts. I use miner-al . Dust my veggies and then toss it like a salad. They seem to enjoy it . .

A suggestion from a woman on an email list I'm on who has many years experience with uro was to grind up cuttlebone (found in the bird section of petstores) and leave a dish of it in the uro enclosure. She says they eat it when they need calcium and don't eat it when they don't - they get exactly as much as they need and no more. I've not tried it, but it might be worth trying if you can't get her enough calcium any other way.
