Brown snake

Califia Aug 28, 2004 01:36 PM

I found a dekay's brown snake yesterday evening and brought him home. I was wondering if all he will eat is slugs and earthworms, because we could get crickets for him during the winter. he is small, somewhere around 6 to 8 inches. didn't bite at all, just flared a little bit. I was just curious about him because if I keep him I will want to know possible foods for him other than those he would eat in the wild.
thanks,
cali

Not very apt to eat crickets. Some people report captives eating fish. But why bother? Earthworms should be a complete diet and readily available for you. You could store a supply in the refrigerator over the winter. But be prepared for your snake to stop feeding and want to brumate in the winter. Spend some time reading the threads in this forum for helpful information. Good luck.

I use to have a few of these little guys when I was a kid along with a few garter snakes, all WC adults. Crickets are pretty much useless as most dekay's will not accept them. They will however accept waxworms which are pretty common to get at pet stores and are cheap,50 of em cost like maybe a 1.50...Just keep em in some saw dust in the fridge and most will stay alive for about 2 weeks..You 'MIGHT' also be able to find some in bait and tackle shops as trout love these things.

when i had my two youngins (northern browns) i bought a red worm farm for them to have food, they ate them all winter and were fine, another good thing about the farm is you get to re use the dinner scraps to feed the worms and then feed the snake, some people will apparently buy worm castings (poo) to use in their gardens as it is some great fertalizer.
good luck
