I know that a 20 gallon tank is adequate for an adult corn snake, but I was wondering if I can put a young snake in there and he won't be stressed by the huge area.

I don't think there will be a problem. When I first bought my cornsnake I put him into a 35 gal tank and he was fine. Though, at the time he was about 14" long.
Provide lots of hides and cover (other deco, plants, etc) so that it's not a huge open space where your snake will feel vulnerable and insecure. And make sure the hides aren't too big.
