Bull snake biting?

got2strum Aug 28, 2004 06:01 PM

O.k., this might sound dumb to you all, but I just got my first Bull in July so I don't know. Recently, every time I get my bull out he's been real jittery and fast when I open the cage. Then open mouth hissing when I go to grab him , and even when I pick him up at first. I'm just waiting to get nailed but was wondering what to expect if I do. Will he let go ,and how should I get him off if he doesn't? Also , what first aid will I need? I'm only asking cause I know its bound to happen and I've never had anything over 3' nail me.{he's about 6'} I can't believe I still go to grab him but I figure if he's gonna do it I can't stop him. Thanks

The bite, the bigger the puncture marks. A six-footer can give you a painful bite if you’re not used to it. However, even the ones that do bite should calm down as soon as they’re handled. Try waiting until nighttime when the temps drop and he’s curled up in his hide. Lift up his hide and gently try to pick him up from the sides while trying to stay away from his face. Before he turns his head lift him up and he should not try to bite. If you can’t get that to work then use a hook or put on some thick gloves to get him off the ground and then handle him with your hands. He will most likely strike and not grab on. Keep some rubbing alcohol and swabs handy and use an antiseptic like Neosporen if he gets you. If he does latch on to your hand swab some alcohol near his nose and he’ll let go. By the way how old is he how was he cared for before you got him? Was he not handled often or was he always this way? I’m sure with some work you will get him used to you in no time. Hope I’ve helped, good luck. Post pics if you can.

A snake hook is always a plus to keep around when you have snakes that are 6 feet or more. You can use the hook to maneuver his head away from you while lifting the middle or back part of the snake's body up. Generally you won't need the hook after you get him up and out of his cage or enclosure.

I also keep alcohol and antiseptic wipes handy around the snake enclosures as nz suggests.
