Dumeril bite but not constict prey

tim5580 Aug 28, 2004 07:04 PM

I put a baby mouse in for my female baby dumeril today. She bit it right after I moved away from cage. She just bit it on the face and didn't coil around it, so I stood around for 30 seconds or so in the corner of the room and she just held it there with just her head sticking out from under the substrate. The baby mouse was wiggling so I am pretty sure she didn't think it was dead. So I figured she wants some privacy and left the room and I am assuming she killed it and ate it because I can't see it in there anymore (unless she buried it or put it in her hide box). Anyone ever see this behavior before?

that are used to eating pre-killed or thawed frozen don't even bother to constrict their prey. They just start swallowing. I have six Dumerils of various ages and I always pre-kill their food, for the most part they still constrict. But at times they just stroll up to it and feed. I have seen plenty of hungry youngsters that don't care if its moving or not, down the hatch!
