San Francisco Bay Area herps...small sampling.

bayareaherper Aug 28, 2004 08:07 PM

These are some critters I've been able to photograph recently. Sadly, some of the ommissions are glaring because I have to wheedle and cajole the camera's owner to have access to it even for an afternoon. He is rather sensitive to the prospect of what might happen to his expensive toy were a horde of bees to attack without warning (which they did once already.)

Needless to say, this small collection therefore doesn't reflect the herpetological diversity of this area but maybe I'll be able to update as time passes.

That is NOT a Valley Garter Snake. The species you have is called the California Red-Sided Garter Snake. Thamnophis Sirtalis Infernalis

Can,t blame the guy for being touchy with his camera, they are expensive. But you look like you know what your doing, those are some great pictures, and some great finds. I've been following your herp reports for about a year now I guess, and always look foward to reading, and finding out what's happening in the Bay Area, since I'm a Bay Area resident. Keep up the great work.

The pictures are o.k. I really admire the natural settings, unlike the roads, counter tops and arm hair in your pictures. Do you think you could incorporate the head detail and body into the same shot. If not, thats fine. And please drop the locality info! Thanks
