Habitat Shot for Cal.Kings..

jeph Aug 28, 2004 09:16 PM

HI,
Heres a shot of road I drive on everyday-(going back and forth from San bernardino to Lake Arrowhead) of Waterman Canyon-(its closed right now and for residents only, from the flood on x-mas day still, I hope they keep it closed). But Due to the closure I've seen many live snakes this year on the road-(its uauslly many dead ones and the occasional live one). This section is about mid way through the canyon, and about 100 feet off the road.Probally around 500 ft eleavtion I'd guess, its about 2000 ft at the top of the canyon-which leads to the start of bonnie canyon-(where I've heard of people seeing zonatas there) I'll post a couple pics of some cal.kings I've seen from this section this year next. Well just wanted to share some pics....

Hi,
Just about a month apart, and about 25 feet from the female was seen a month before. I'll post another pic of him after this one. He was very thirsty, he drank water right out of the bottle lid-(from some bottled water), anyways, enjoy the pic,

Hi,
Heres another shot of the male. These are the 2 live ones I've seen on the road this year-(it takes me about 10 minutes to drive the road, well longer for me since I'm going slow and stopping at times, but its not very long, and I just go through it-not turning around and making a another trip, well at times I have), last night a I saw a southern pacific there, thats the snake I've seen most of there this year. Still havnt found a rosy there but I think they are there. Anyways, peace,

The Cal Kings look like they've been eating pretty good. Thanks for posting pics.

Hi, Jeff. Thanks for the report. Those are nice looking kings. Would they be considered the desert phase?

I made a couple tries to find AZ mtn. kings this summer, but didn't see any. I was busier than usual with friends and didn't get to the mtn. tops much. Maybe next year.

I did see two desert king intergrades, but neither was very pretty. I'll probably keep some Cal Kings someday. Later...

Hi Terry,
Actually they are coastal phase cals., and they both have a little different coloring. The smaller female was darker black, and the larger male was more brown. But last year right after the fire I saw a DOR one that was light brown and white bands-(with a tinge of yellow, but more white), and maybe about 1 mile from these. So they are variable within the canyon. Well I'll talk to you later,

the guy is trying to say that your post is worthless...

jeph Aug 30, 2004 07:45 PM

Hi,
Thanks. But isnt this the forum to post pics of herps in the field...? maybe I posted in the wrong place or something, oh well. I think a few people enjoyed seeing the pics, maybe not you I guess, or the other guy. But why would you say-(or you said he thinks it was a worthless post, do you know this guy and he said that to you...?), but I dont get how posting a pic of a herp in the field-(and a habitat shot) is worthless....?, do other people here think the same..?, if I'll stop posting field pics here I guess, sorry,

Actually, i think you're both taking his post wrong. I think he didn't understand that the pic you posted, is of the habitat you are finding these snakes in.

If the first poster is saying your post is worthless, well he's wrong, and I'm pretty sure the rest of us know that, but i don't think that was the reason for his post, or at least, I hope not.

The second poster is defending your post, not flaming you.

I love the pics you are posting. This is in my area as well. Anything posted on this forum is usually of high interest to me. I just think that "what and why" guy should not be so critical of other people's work. I don't see roadkill posting anything of his own, yet he's sitting there putting other people down becausew it's something that is not in his interest, and that kind of attitude sucks. To jeph, great job with the post. It's great to see people sharing there finds, that is what the forum is for.

I love having the habitat shot aded to the mix. It gives a nice feel of the territory. Thanks.

Thanks for the post Jeff.
I appreciate your Input on Habitat pics and pics of herps.
Keep them coming on this forum.
This is an " in the field & observations" forum.

I use all this to give my son and his friends info on snakes and herps in general. It keeps them off the streets and in nature.
