sikorae sikorae and sameti

lismil Aug 28, 2004 09:40 PM

I have heard two different stories as to weather a sameti and a sikorae will mate, and weather it would be desirable or not. Many people have said they do not think they would mate, but my local herp shop owner(the owner seems to know his info) swears up and down that the two subspecies WILL indeed mate and produce fertile eggs. So, I was wondering what your opinions on this are, and if it is possible for them to produce babies, do you think it would be desirable or not? Thanks.

if anything, what i say would be most 'undesirable' of the mixed subspecies is the fact that it could impact captive breeding lines further down the road. who would want the two distinct subspecies to wither away through the years?

its gotta be possible the only difference is the color of the mouth .... i just think that that there might be a chance it comes out a mule(infertile) but i doubt it. i'm no expert yet tho so don't trust me on that one.

i have a question since we're on the subject.. is it possible that a spearpoint and satanic can breed? is that what a long tailed spear point is?

the satanic and spearpoints are another one that Ive heard two conflicting stories on as to weather they would breed or not, but the impression Im getting is that people dont like the idea of breeding two subspecies, because they are afraid that they will be bred to thje point that the two seperate sub species might not exist in captivity any more as a pure subspecies.

thats a good point. but remember, phantasticus and ebenaui are distinct SPECIES, not subspecies. i, too, have asked myself whether that could be where so-called 'long-tailed' ebenaui come from. these two species look so similar, with the exception of general body size (ive heard ebenaui get a lil bigger than phantasticus), and of course the tail length. i definitely wouldnt TRY to cross breed the two species, for the reason set forth in the previous post. ive also heard of quite a few people who keep ebenaui and phantasticus together, but ive never actually heard of anyone having 'success,' if you can call it that, at interbreeding the two.

from what i have heard is that than have been known to breed but rarely and its makes they uroplatus malama but i dont know and most recommend that you keep them septrately but can you together its your choice on whatever you want to pick
