I am a new owner of 2 hognoses

shasha369 Aug 28, 2004 10:20 PM

Hello I just purchased 2 hognoses at the Tucson Reptile Show and as a past owner of kings, Balls, and Uro's, Beardies, L. Gecko's,and other assorted reptiles I am not a complete novice, BUT I have never had hognoses before and know that the guys on kingsnake have alot more experience than I do so please let me pick your brains. I put the female in a 20 long with aspen, an under tank heater, water bowl and a hide. Ditto for the male except he is in a 10 gal. I did not put any special lighting up, Do I need any? Does it sound like an OK set up? Is there a good web site for Info? WELL I JUST WANTED TO INTRO MYSELF SINCE YOU WILL BE HEARING FROM ME IN THE FUTURE HOPEFULLY WITHOUT PROBLEMS

Basic setup sounds good. I do not use special lighting but some do. I have a female Western; she likes to bask under a simple (30 watt) Home Depot spotlight. Nothing special in my lighting, and this is the only snake I have ever owned that actually basked. My male Ball basks maybe twice a year. The Hog will almost every day. I use aspin shavings about 3 inches deep over half the cage. Nothing special about the aspin, I get it cheap from Wal-Mart. You may have trouble feeding at first. I did along with many others. Mine likes live fuzzy/hopper mice all the time, F/T sometimes and will eat anything if I scent it with a feeder fish from my wife’s aquariums. Mine now eats like a.... well... hog!

Some hogs will feed perfectly almost all year round, but many will not eat during winter and A LOT of males will not feed anytime during what they feel is breeding season. If your snake goes off feed for a few months, just make sure it is not losing too much weight. A lot of people get very stressed about this and try to force feed their animals. This can just lead to new and more problems. Andy

Thanks to both of you for the info since my 2 are still babies ( born early Jul and early Jun) I do not have to worry to much about breeding behavior yet but it is always wise to keep this stuff in mind as they age.

I have never had problems when feedind. If they refuse mice they take six lined or earless without even a flinch.

why not feed your king mice? it's a lot easier that snakes and anoles and you don't have to worry about parasites when you deal with FT....

Well, after what I have been told,(thanks Colchicine ) it is much more natural to have an overhead heat source, they burrow to escape heat.
