Iggy out of enclosure first time in 2 years!

Lyn Aug 28, 2004 11:00 PM

I adopted Norbert on July 25th (some of you might have read my posts). He is 5 years old and prior to coming to live with me, he was not takend out of his enclosure AT ALL for 2 years. They did take him out when he was younger. He was out the day I got him, but only from the cage, into the carrying container, then out of the container and back into the cage once at my house, he didn't get to walk around or anything. Technically he did let himself out once since I got him, I left the cage door open and went to wash his food bowl and he jumped out and over to the top of the frog enclosure. But I picked him up and put him right back so that doesn't really count either. I've been working on getting to know him and him getting to know me, and decided today was the day I was going to take him out. Not outside, he's not tame and would run away in a heart beat. But upstairs into a bedroom I had Iggy Proofed as best as I could. He seemed to have a good time and explored all over. I took over 60 pics which are on my site. Here are just a couple...

My makeshift Iggy climbing corner. Not pretty, but it worked. I'm going to put up some nice strong shelves around the room for him to climb on

He found the window and looked out for a bit...

He walked all around looking all over

He figured out how to climb pretty fast...

I look forward to more "outings" for him and to fixing up the room with more places for him to explore and climb. He doesn't like to be handled, so getting him up to the room and catching him to get him back down is a bit hard. If I go near him in the room he puffs up, hisses, and tail whips. But I was able to get him up there and back down w/out him hurting me or me hurting him. Hopefully he'll get better with the handling. If not, at least I'm able to get him out for some excercize now!

he looks like he is having fun. he is very lucky to have found you. not many people would want to take in a unsocialized adult ig. but i think with your help and love he will get alot tamer. good luck. and great job.
