Shedding problems

drykilllogic83 Aug 29, 2004 12:08 AM

My red tegu has been in the process of shedding for about a month now and she still has a lot more to go. I bought some easy shed spray crap and used it today. I am not sure if is going to work or not. Does anybody have any home recipes to put on a tegu to help them shed? And yes I have been feeding her fruits and giving her baths. thanks

Hello I would try shed ease I do not know who makes it but that is the name of it. What you do is put some in the water with your tegu while it in the bath. This should help. Also what I had to do with our red even though he was eating a ton of fruit and got regular baths, was put a humidifier in the tank with him. I would leave it on for a little while daily and that seemed to do the trick for us. Good luck

make sure the humidity is high enough in the tank, it should be around 70. also, i was given the advice of putting small amounts of olive oil on the problem areas after a bath. watch your tegu's toes carefully and any other part, because constriction of the skin can become a serious problem. lizards have lost their digits and parts of their tails due to the lack of blood flow from constriction.

I had read once that you can have too much humidity (not sure in this case, but just to relay information). I didn't think too much of it, however my red has been having massive shedding problems on his hine legs and tail. It looks very dry and old, as well as caked on and seemed to become a large problem. I bathed him regulary raised the humidity and nothing seemed to pull through. The skin was strong and still attached, but you could tell by the thickness and the tightness that it must have been atleast 3 sheds worth. Over time I let the humidity levels drop naturally. It seemed the skin, slowly dried out, and started cracking, which then I have been able to aid him in pulling it off. his hine legs shedded by themselves with the drop in humidity, but the tail I had to help him with most of it. Looks great now though at 100% completion of shedding... untill next time.

I believe you are correct with too much humidity being just as bad as not enough. First check your humidity to see where you are at. Then you can adjust to more or less from there. I think with too much humidity the shed skin stays moist and does not dry out and seperate from the animal. Good luck
