Redwood/Pine Bark for Cal. king?

D41LYBR34D Aug 29, 2004 12:25 AM

Recently, when I went to a redwood national park near my house, I picked up some big slabs of redwood or pine(I think it's redwood)bark laying on the ground. I want to know if I can use them as backgrounds ina viv I'm making for my female Cal. King. I know it's not good to use redwood shavings as bedding, but I'm just going to silicone it to a wall to simulate a tree trunk or something. Does anyone know if this would be a good idea or not? Thanks

If you're going to use bark, spray it with a couple of heavy coats of polyurethane lacquer and let it dry COMPLETELY before you use it. There are asbestos-like fibers and tannins (acidic chemicals) in Redwood bark, and other toxins in pine bark that are all potentially harmful to snakes.

Good luck.
