Hissing roaches as a staple?

kephy Aug 29, 2004 01:30 PM

I'm going to be breeding some Madagascar hissing cockroaches as food for my bearded dragons. I'm wondering if they would be a good staple for my pictus gecko as well, or should I stick with crickets for him? Any input?

Thanks.

I would stay away from the hissers. They are a fun roach but not the best feeder. There exo-skelton is much harder than some of the other species, plus they can climb. I breed, feed, and sell orange heads, orange spotteds, discoids, and death heads. All of these non-climbers are great roaches for geckos, dragons, monitors, and cham. It takes a little time to biuld a colony, but I never buy any food now and my animals all do great.

I don't have a choice, I won the hissers in a contest from a guy who breeds them. I know not to feed the adult roaches, but I was under the impression that the nymphs and younger roaches made a good staple insect. If that's not good for the gecko though, I'll stick to crickets. Kind of a pain having to deal with both, though.
