Automatic lighting...a quandry

Tom_OH Aug 29, 2004 01:52 PM

> Hi guys, board newbie here with a question.

My breeders have all been going on a natural light cycle for a few years now, until recently I haven't used and supplementary light, merely let the daylight do it's own work in a snakeroom with windows throughout.

Recently we bought a new house and the Snakes went into a room with no windows, thus changing my lighting requirements. I want to put the room on an automatic light activated timer but those all seem to work with the opposite cycle from what I'm looking for ie: they go on at sunset and off at dawn.

Does anyone know where I can find a timer that actually turns power on with the light? I can do regular timers and adjust on a weekly basis, and I know there are thousands of other breeders who get on just well with similar setups but I'd really like to go this route if possible.

Thanks for any help!

Home improvement stores sell timers where you can set the power to the output to come ON however you wish. So, there is your answer to the lighting and heating time intervals.

There used to be a light-sensitive photo cell that could be "switched". It was a product that was designed to be used with outdoor lighting. In it's default mode it turned lights on at sunset and off at sunrise. But there was a way to reverse that to what you are looking for.

This was many years ago, however, and I've not looked into in some time.

I'm sure there is a way to build something like this yourself. A Grainger catalog might be a good place to start.

I wish i could remember whos sight i saw this on.

Mount a photo cell inside an electrical box along side a small lightbulb. That lightbulb is supplied power from another photocell outside the box(solar activated).
What this does is turn on the bulb at dark, thus activating the photocell in the box to turn off the lights in your enclosures.
