I really hadn't planned on coming home with anything new from the show...

Raven01 Aug 29, 2004 03:03 PM

but I couldn't pass this trade up. Meet my new pair of Cuban boas..........

Male (in blue currently)

Female (recently shed according to person I traded with)

And a close-up of her lovely face....

The care is supposed to be basically the same as the redtails (any additional info would be appreciated) and I've heard mixed reviews on adult size and temperament. As of right now, they're about 4' long (give or take a bit) and both seem quite docile....of course, they haven't settled in yet either! lol All in all I'm quite pleased.

BTW Brian, the other half didn't freak out too bad since I did come home with fewer animals than I left with! lol

I like those! That female does have a "sweet" face. Hope they stay nice and mellow for you after they acclimate. I don't know anything about their temperaments.

How's their temperment ?

So far both are pretty docile, even with the male being in shed. I handled both prior to the trade and they were calm and inquisitive but not nervous acting. As a further testament to their current dispositions, I had to stop once on the way home (hour and a half drive from the show) because I smelled the familiar odor of excrement. Since I was in my other half's vehicle, and the snakes were on the back seat in a perforated tub, I knew I HAD to check to make sure there was no 'leakage'. On an I95 rest stop, I handled both snakes while my best friend cleaned up my new 'present'. With traffic speeding by, my friend stooped on the ground nearby cleaning the tub and cars parking around us, they remained calm though inquisitive...the female trying to get back in the truck while the male was trying to check out my best friend's head. No bites to either of us and they went back in the tubs uneventfully.

At this point, I'll say they're quite sweet. However, most of what I've read on the Net since I got home says they're supposed to be psychoticly unpredictable and prone to attaching themselves to you by their teeth. I was told when I traded for them that they average 7-8 feet in length. Most of what I've read agrees with that, with the exception of a couple of sites and an email reply that mentioned that they can reach 12 feet. Uh-oh. Oh well, we'll see how it goes.

Better you than me! I didn't take home anything new. Good luck with the Cubans.

Hey Bryan! I tried real hard not to, but Kevin made me a good deal on them. I'd seen them shortly after the show opened but wanted to think on it...plus see who I sold off to justify it! lol The other half wasn't too terribly upset by it. He said he'd have been surprised if I hadn't come home with something I didn't leave with...and was pleased that I came home with fewer than I went with even counting the Cubans. I like working with unusual animals, so this was an opportunity I didn't feel I could pass up. We'll see how they work out.
