Lately there has been a proliferation of questions on the forum about using waxworms as a feeder insect. There has also been a lot of misinformation about this issue. Feeding waxworms as a staple MAY BE (and probably is) detrimental to long term health in leopard geckos, but as an occasional supplement it MAY BE (and probably is) a beneficial feeder insect. A diet that lacks some variety probably is not very good for long term gecko health. I have a 4 month study starting in December to study weight gain and diet in leopard geckos. But to help answer some questions about waxies: waxies have a higher fat content (could be bad thing or a good thing), a higher calcium content (certainly a good thing), a higher fiber content (good thing),and a lower phosphorus content (good thing) than crickets, mealworms or superworms. The bad news is waxies are also lower in protein than other feeders.
