Do they keep their gills until their bigger?....

Hi I have a three lined newt i belive, with gills. But, he still come out of the water and lays on the side of the container. could he be loosing his gills?

It is probably morphing. Just leave it alone until you notice that he never goes back into the water and his gills are completly gone. You can then move him to a totally terrestrial setup! Although to be honest, I have noticed that some terrestrial salamander occasionally take a dip into water when there is a water source in the setup!
