Any thoughts on a substitute meat??

beausblue Aug 29, 2004 06:55 PM

I was wondering if any one had given any thoughts to a substitute meat for the SDZ other than chicken or turkey. I have a contact from my days of dogsledd racing that sells lean horse meat in frozen 40 pound blocks with bone ground in with it. I was just wondering since I can get a 40 pound block for less than it costs me to get 6 pounds of lean turkey or chicken.
Just a thought wondering what every one else thinks.

Beau,

I have used ground beef in the place of turkey, when the store didnt have it. I mixed the SDZ the same way, and It didnt seem to make a difference at all. Don't know about horse meat though.

I thought about the horse meat since it is normally very lean. I also have used a lean ground beef when the store did not have chicken or turkey. Thanks for the reply.

I know that people use lean beef if nothing else is available, but a steady diet is discouraged. Not sure what the reason is, but I suspect that even lean beef is way fattier than turkey. I would suspect that the same is true of horse meat, maybe if you can't find anything else, but not as a regular diet.

Thank you for the advice. I just talked to them again and they are offering once a month whole ground chicken (bones and all) in 50 pound blocks. So I will just have to place orders for a month in advance. Thank you all though for the advice.
