parasites

mr_president Aug 29, 2004 08:08 PM

hi
i bought a beardy about 2-3 weeks ago, and i have been reading a lot that i should get a fecal done on my beardy. i am going to book an appointment with a vet just to get an overall check done on my little guy but if i wait too long, can the parasites be fatal to my BD? should i go right away. what can i do at home in the mean time? if you help me out by suggesting products you wont be held responsible for anything, other then helping me. :D

Thanks in Advance

It's great that you have your baby's first checkup scheduled. At most vet clinics a fecal by itself can actually be done anytime: Scoop up a poop, pop it in a baggie labeled with your name, the date and the fact that it is a bearded dragon, and drop it by the vet's office. If you have to wait a day, stick it in the fridge, but it is best to try and get it in the same day. I usually get the results the next day at the very latest.

If you are in an isolated area or simply must wait for several weeks before you can get to the vet for any other reason, I have always had good luck with a product called ParaZap. You can order it a number of places online. Of course, by the time it gets to you, you may have already seen the vet . Still not a bad thing to have around. Probiotics (Acidophiliz or Benebac) are also a good thing to have on hand.

The main things you can do now (and forever )are: practice excellent cage (and dragon) hygeine, thoroughly wash all greens and veggies and make sure all your other environmental conditions are optimal.

Best,
Michele
