HELP!! Little Flying Fruit flies everywhere!

xxcolbyxx Aug 29, 2004 08:59 PM

THese little fly things started flying around my Alli's cage all of a suden. Is there a way to get rid of them? I tried venting the cage, but they seem too dumb to fly out.

Hey man,

Do you know where they came from? I would think that would be a good start to solving this problem. Do you have anything rotting in there? Mold growing on anything? Moss growing on some logs perhaps? Flies tend to like these things. If you can single out where they are coming from, get rid of the vector. If you can't, I would suppose the best way to get rid of these pests would be to start over. Dump your substrate, give the enclosure a good bath (bleach is Ok) Clean the rocks in a similar fashion, throw out the sticks, logs, etc. Get some new ones. Before you start putting things back in your tank, make sure all the cleaning agents are gone. Acheived by thorough rinsing. Try a new substrate, and I think perhaps your problem will go away.

A parting thought: You have baby Allies right? have you considered trying to feed these flies to them? I don't know if they're too small for the little lizards, but I know that young frogs like flies of any sort. leave a small piece of fruit out, and you can attract the flies almost anywhere you want.
Ok. Hope this helps.

I ended up rising the logs and then sifted the substrate. A lot of them flew out immediately and eventually they all seemed to be gone.

I always thought that my little ALli's would eat em. I guess they ate them while i was away, but i never actually witnessed them eat any. ALl of my 5 alli's seem to LOVE crickets the most. Nearly all of them will eat around 7 small ones a day if i let them. Talk about an appetite! I quess that they are now too big for those flies. My smallest one is around 4 inches now.
