What to do?

golfdiva Aug 29, 2004 10:15 PM

Last spring, my husband built a huge enclosure for my turtles in the yard. A few days ago, I saw a very large garter snake in it! I knew one lived in the area, we would see it every now and then.

I think it can't get out of the cage. It is entirely screened in with rabbit cage wire going 18" down into the ground. The snake was at least 1" around. Can in squeeze out of a hole about 1/4"?

Should I try to catch it and let it go outside the cage?

Can I let it stay in the cage? What would it need to be happy here?

I do like the idea of having a "pet" snake too. It doesn't bother the turtles, they are too big for it.

Thanks for any help!

Put some Gold fish into the pond small ones and put earthworms in to not only will your turtles love them but so will the garter. That is if the turtles do not get him first. I am pretty sure the snake will be able to get out. If the top is open then he will be able to climb it pretty easily!

Thanks for the help!

The snake can probably get in and out of the pond, but the enclosure is like a screened in porch with no floor. I don't think it can get out of that.

Will the snake be ok to hibernate here in the winter??
