new frog in NJ

mn9796 Aug 30, 2004 01:11 AM

In my last post, I told you about the frog that my kids found and how it died-now I need to know if anyone knows where I can get them a new frog in NJ. I want a simple frog, nothing fancy that needs too much attention. I don't want something that climbs all over the place or anything. The pet stores around here don't have a whole lot. I have seen green treefrogs, they are a little too bright and climb too much. I have seen a pacman frog in a store-too big and from what I have seen hard to care for. I want something that doesn't need heat lamps and or misters. I am not interested in fully aquatic frogs either. What kind of frog do you suggest. As I said in my last post, I don't know what kind of frog we had, but he resembled a green frog or a carpenter frog.

maybe a leopard frog, or firebellied toads seem to make really nice (and simple to take care of) pets.

I would agree with a fire belly toad. I would stray away from leopard frogs simply because they are fairly skittish, adults can jump fairly far and fairly quickly, and they are almost all WC. Fire bellies are great startes frogs though. Do some research on them before bringing one home though.

What is WC?

amphibianfreak Aug 30, 2004 06:23 PM

WC means wild caught, CB means captive bred

I read that leopard frogs were good starters, but you say no. Ok I will have to look into it. Thanks.

I have a leopard frog and some times if u walk in the room all u see is legs all over the tank definetly not for begginers. And all frogs need misting except semi and full aquatic frogs, but its still a good idea to mist. Pac man frogs aren't that hard to take care of all u need to do is change the water daily and change substrate everyonce in a while in between that u should spot clean for poo.

Aquatic frogs are awesome! lol Nice and easy for beginners. The smaller ones can be kept at one gallon of water per frog and pretty entertaining littleguys. While the larger ones need 7-10 gallons per frog.
Some of the best beginners frogs are fire-bellied toads. Fairly easy to take care of.
White's tree frogs are pretty nice too, but liek you said, you don't want a tree frog or an aquatic. So you'll prolly want a fire-bellied toad.
I think any of the true frogs from the genus Rana are pretty skittish, like American Bullfrogs, Leopard frogs, Pickerel frogs and such.
