Out in the Glades

rearfang Aug 30, 2004 06:51 AM

Was out in the northern Everglades (in an area known localy as the Holey Lands) on a back road flanked by canals. I saw a 3.5-4' Indigo cross in front of our truck at about 10:30 AM. I managed to get within ten feet before it decided we were a problem. It which point it crawled out of our way into some high grass where we couldn't find it (camera in hand). I was amazed we had the luck of it as the area was loaded with Bow hunters in trucks and motorcycles, and this was a bright sunny day.

You sure are lucky, I have been out to Holey land millions of times and have seen everything but an indigo snake. Luckily my wifes idea of a good time is driving down the paved road and removing snakes from the road before they get run over. I've pretty given up all hope in seeing an indigo and pretty much thought I'd never see one. My first trip out there was to catch treefrogs for my stubborn newborn indigo. Where did you see it at?
Sincerely,
Roly

Since you know the Holey lands you are familiar with the first big pumping station. instead of crossing the bridge we made the right turn which put us on the east side of the canal. That leads a few miles to the new pump station (a dead end). Along that stretch I saw it.
