Ants in Tegu Cage

emumaster17 Aug 30, 2004 07:59 AM

Last night I found a rather large amout of ants in my baby argentine b/w's cage. They are all over my room. They are taking over. I killed as many as I could.
My question is: Will they hurt the tegu? Will he eat them? I don't want to use any pesticides in the room because I keep my crickets and all my other animals in there.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of them? A Horned Lizard perhaps? j/k

Thanks.

Hi,

If you look around online, you can find pesticide free ant bait traps, which the ants are drawn to, but they won't hurt the other animals living in your room.

There are also a lot of home recipes online for the same problem, that do not involve using any chemicals.

The ants are most likely drawn to any food that may be left in the enclosure after feeding time, which is most likely the cause of the problem.

hope this helps....

use ant bait but that will only go so far. Whan I had the same problem with ants coming after fruit in my BTS cage I had a professional exterminator try to get rid of them. 3 months and nothing. Then I got some Black Knight. I sprayed it around the doors into the room and on the floor around the cages. I set up barriers for the ants to cross and when they did... BAM they were dead. It's been years and after 2 or 3 treatments they never came back. Black Knight is under litigation preventing them from manufacturing any product at this time (it doesn't look like they will be back). I talked to the folks at provent a mite and they made claims that their product is even more effective than Black Knight. I have no personal experience with the product, just passing along info here. If you want to get Black Knight, I know someone with a few cans left he would sell. Give me a shout.

Thanks for the help. I have some of those bait traps in there now. I used them before they just took a while to kill all of the ants. Looks like they are somewhat clearing up.

Thanks.
