your box turtle appears to be digging under his water bowl. He is doing this for a couple reasons. One he is probably trying to get out of the direct light. He is probably looking for a shady area. Also he could be digging under his bowl because it is moist under there, from the water overflow. This is normal behavior for box turtles. I would suggest putting a shady area in the cage possibly a plant or some type of enclosure.

Have you marked your turtle with a pink pen or paint? If not, those pink spots on its back looks like a bad shell infection. Box turtles should not have any pink spots on their shell. If not paint, (which shouldn't be done either) get the turtle to a good turtle vet or you will lose him. Shell infections must be treated with injectable antibiotics.

Do you keep live worms or insects in the enclosure with the turtle?
Worms and insects will often gather underneath a water dish as this tends to be a moist area. The turtle can probably smell them if they are there.

What is the range of temperature in the cage? Your turtle may be seeking a cool wet place.

What is are the red spots on the turtle's shell?
