Trouble Feeding Baby Ring-Necked Snakes

albrown Aug 30, 2004 01:08 PM

My female ring-necked snake laid and hatched two babies. But now I'm having trouble getting them to eat. They are about one month old, only 1/2 cm in diameter and about 5 in long. They have both shed once already and seem well adjusted to their cage. It seems I cant find any food small enough for them. I've tried worms (even cut up) but they are still too big. Please help!

Ringnecks are sometimes finicky eaters as hatchlings. My friend used to keep them exclusively on small salamanders, but that can be a little hard to do. If I remember right he fed his northern ringnecks dusky salamanders.

Not sure though, try the "Small Terrestrial Snakes" forum if you don't get enough help here.

What kind of worms? Most red wigglers are easily small enough neonate ringnecks, browns, and earth snakes. You can buy them at petstores and baitshops.

You didn't say what sub-species of ringneck snake you had, different sub-species favor different prey items, some relish worms, while others won't take two looks at one. I recently got my neonate northerns feeding on salamander tails, it took them about a month of adjusting as well.

Your best bet is salamanders/salamander tails, or keep trying with the worms. They'll also eat slugs, ant eggs, snakes, lizards, salamander eggs, small feeder fish and hairless caterpillars.
