.. one of my questions never really got answered..

whats the minimum floor space a 1.1 group needs?

i bought my 2 rats yesterday for $2 each.. theyre not adults yet so i have them in a spare 10 gallon tank for the moment. id rather not keep them in glass, id use a sterilite or whatever plastic tub... thats what i keep my mice in..

thanks... dave

I think 2 mice woul be ok in a medium tub. Like a rubbermad. I am planning on keeping 2 rats in a custom tank. I have kept mice before but those were just pets. I had them in a 10 gallon.

no no I misunderstood. I read it again and it told about the rats you bought. 2 rats can fit comfortable in a 20-30 gallon would think. Make sure to have another cage to separte them when you don't need any more babies. How old are those rats? and can you handle them with out them trying to bite you?

i know they arent adults but they were only 2 dollars each.. and i got the last male they had..

they dont try to bite me but they are still a little skitish.. im going to handle the female a lot so she gets used to me and my smell and wont mind me taking her babies too much...

long old do you think they are? when will they start breeding? i guess ill know when i find some pinks..

so will a tub like 25" by 15" be good for them? im not sure what tubs ill find at walmart though..

Yeah thats enough space. Nice rats! I have done lots of research and they will start breeding at 6 weeks. I don't know how old they are.

MALES will start breeding at 6 weeks of age.. girls wont breed for the first 2-3 months..

setup your colony.. and leave em to grow up together.. they will breed when the female is old enough to breed.. LOL

best of luck

Females from my feeder line are always capable of breeding successfully before my males. The males start trying at a younger age than the females but can't seem to get it done. Maybe it's just my lines or the way I do something... I don't know.

My feeder line females are at least 175 grams at day 42 or they're culled. With a male of the same weight and age, I get no successful breeding. Placed with an older and larger male, I get successful breeding on the first heat cycle after day 42.

My "wannabe someday" show line is a little different because of different culling standards, but seem to follow the same general patterns.
