firefly62984 Aug 30, 2004 10:00 PM

On of my co-workers found this snake in the freight room and had no idea what kind of snake it is. I think its either a bull snake or a Rattlesnake, but I'm scared to touch it incase its poisoness.... I dont know what to do! I have attatched some pictures..
as for location I live in Southern Oregon, Medford to be exact, its really dry and hot here in the summer... i dont know what else would help. I hope i get a reply soon, because I dont know how to care for this creature until I know what it is exactly. thanks for anyones help

That's a bullsnake. Or at least some type of Pituophis depending on where it's from. Don't worry, it's not venomous.

Looks like a bull or ghopher snake, def. not a rattler.

Thanks so much, does anyone know how I would care for this snake? From what I've researched I beleive they get quite large, this one is really thin, about as wide as my pinky finger and only a bit over a foot long. I got him sitting in a 10 gallon glass fishtank at the moment...
Does anyone know a good website with feeding information and habitat stuff?

Where are you located? Before you decide to make it your pet, you may want to be sure that keeping it is legal.

It is a pacific gopher and if you are going to keep it I would try to mimic it's natural habitat as close as possible. Dessert grassy plains with sage brush and manzanita wood as well as rocky areas and a large enough bowl of water that it can fit in. Look for a gopher snake care sheet on the caresheet page or type it in a search engine somewhere. they are easy to keep and care for. Hope this helps.

It's a gopher snake, not sure what kind, def. non-venomous, but you should let it go and just keep the pics. Pics last forever. Plus it is illegal to keep native herps.

Today I took Gus back to the area that I found him, as awesome as he was, I learned that he should not be kept as a pet because of his prior wild-animalness and because he could have various external and internal parasites. (and that it is illegal to take snakes from the wild and adopt them as pets... shh dont tell.)
I will miss Gus very much...
But, I now have an empty cage and some frozen mice babies in my freezer! And I cannot let the death of the baby mices be for no cause, so as soon as I get paid I'm off to the pet store to get a pet snake!!
I have no idea what kind but you will all know when I get back.
Thanks everyone for the very needed advise,
