Tempgun Calibration Distance??

LloydHeilbrunn Aug 30, 2004 10:39 PM

OK,this came in today(Pro Exotic's base model).I'm checking my temps to see if it is a possible issue re: my babies eating, as was suggested below.Instructions only say use "close" At what distance are these actually calibrated for accuracy???

I get a 12 degree temp swing from 1" to 15" and every inch makes a difference..........

Lloyd,

I don't have any personal experience with the tempgun, but after looking on ProExotics site, it looks like it should be used up close, a couple of inches or so. The pictures they show of the gun in use has it held down pretty close to the animal or object. You could always call or e-mail them to be sure.

You basically hold it up close to the area you which to measure.

The tempgun effectively measures the temperature in a conical area from the sensor on the gun. Therefore, the diameter of the base of the cone (the area measured) is dependent on the distance the sensor is from the surface.

If you are close, it measures an area as small as a few cm across. If you pull further back, it is measuring and area that is larger. I believe the relationship is pretty linear, so , for example, it would measure a 1 inch circle from 1 inch away, a 10 inch circle from 10 inches away, etc. The actual values are in the instructions that came with it.

If you pull it a long way back, it averages the temps of everything within the circle.
