new 1 month old not eating

maclen Aug 31, 2004 12:18 AM

okay i have had this baby since thursday and it hasnt began eating yet. I bought it, didnt hatch it, I have been waiting patiently, just figuring its nerves might be a little shot since it has moved. Now I am getting a little nervous. I have noticed the same thing with my velvet gecko as well. I am keeping the crested in a 20 qt. rubbermaid enclosure with screened top, a hide box, an artificial vine and i give him a little CGD every day, which i dont think it has been eating either. I put about 12 tiny lobster roaches in the tank and not one has been eaten. I am taking the vine out for a while tonight to see if maybe that will help him to have them out in the open. Any help, consolation will be appreciated thanks

Maybe 12 little roaches could be stressing him out?

I agree, 12 lobster roaches is much excessive for one little crested. Put one or two at a time. Some of my little cresteds would take mini mealworms, only put 1 or two at a time and took out what they didnt eat the very next day. I also believe you should place the crested in a plastic shoe box container for atleast the first few months of life, this way you can easily monitor food intake and feces. When I bred ciliatus, I would for the first few months (or until the crested showed consistent signs of eating )would smear the baby food on the snout of hatchlings and they will always lick it off. A good mixture that has worked for both my cresteds and leachianus is gerber baby food 50% lamb mixed with 50% hawaiin delight along with rep-cal calcium added every other feeding. The lamb baby food has a good source of protein. Hope this helps.

12 roaches i a lot and can be stressful. imagine yurself in a small room with moving turkey diners that occasionally walk on u. i also think crickets r better than roaches and eiser to obtain. try putting babyfood like ummm the one dude said. they will lick it off because they cant stand wen somethiing is on them. plus, then they realize "hmm this tastes pretty good!" and they eat it. hope this helps a bit.

well i added the roaches over a period of days, usually 3 a day or so. also the gecko is in a plastic shoe box, like i said. i have taken about 3 or 4 roaches out becaue i was looking at them all, and i was paranoid about them being too big for my gecko. i never thought of putting the baby food on its snout, but i am going to try it tonight, sounds promising, thanx.

Actually I think in most(not all)cases new concerned owners worry a little too much about them eating. I have found that reptiles are not at all fond of change. My iguana of 6 years always goes on a two day hunger strike everytime I move him to his summer outside quarters or back in too his winter cage.
My cresteds have always taken a couple days before they ate as I bought each one.And babys eat so little babyfood or cgd that unless you actually see them eating it looks untouched.
I would remove most of the roaches ,My babies have never taken to chomping crickets quickly. Once they begin the prefer them too anything else. But it usually takes a week or so of watching them.

but if they eat so little cgd or baby food you cant notice and i am supposed to remove the roaches, what will they eat??
