E. dione

nydon Aug 31, 2004 07:27 AM

I promised several people that emailed me, that I would post some pictures of some of the Korean species. In a week or two I will get the original tapes that we shot during the making of the series and I will be able to review them and select some better shots to down load (in their natural setting) as still photos but until then I thought I would post a few pictures that I shot with my digital during the taping. For those of you who requested shots of the vipers, I will email those to you direct as they would probably not be of interest on this forum.

Do you absolutely sure that it is Korean dione? You know locality of your snakes? I ask it because snake on this foto very similiar to specimens from so-called Cherskiy complex (russian Far East). Offcourse, Far East and Northern Korea have one border and there can be intergradation zone (or simple widening of areal), but if you know locality - post it here, please. I will be grateful.

Ivan, I am sure it is korean as I live in korea, South Korea. As you know the south does not border russia, not even close. The snake pictured was found 50K east of Seoul. There seems to be 5 color/patterns of diones found in S. Korea, or so I have been told by the "resident experts". I started researching Korean snakes for a TV show we are producing on various Korean species but I have only scratched the surface. There is still lots more work to be done concerning locality, etc.

Oh, but i dont know that you live in Korea. Offcourse, south of your country dont have border with Russia, but it northern part have, it ok?

Thanks for so precise locality, i work with this group and this is very important information for me. I have diones from many localities (i live in Russia) and especially interested in specimens from russian Far East, i.e. neighbor territory with Korea. Can you send me more fotos of diones variations?

I also do some selection work with this species. If you interested - you can see some of results on my site.
