Pillowcases work fine, just check two things. Make sure there are absolutely no holes in the seams and that you turn them inside out to avoid snakes getting snagged in threads.
In regard to breathing, give them your own breath test. Put them up against your mouth and try and breath through them. If you can breath easily, you are fine. If it is difficult, find another pillowcase.
BTW - I used to get all my pillowcases (snake bags) at Garage sales for around 25 cents a piece. Generally it is a good place to find "well broken in" pillowcases.
I am just curious....when you lived in CA did you have a similar "action plan" for earthquakes and wildfires? I think your tornado fear is a little exaggerated. I have lived in tornado areas (TX, OK) for much of my life, including areas that see a lot more tornadoes than MO. I have been lucky enough to see a few tornados in person but have only once (1974) had a tornado threaten an area where we lived.
BTW - I believe they have earthquakes in MO as well. Any contingencies for that possibility? LOL
