Expert Needed in Snake Identification

MissB Jun 25, 2003 11:07 AM

I have a ton of these little snakes in my backyard and want to make sure they are not poisonous. I found one (of the snakes) and have been looking on the Internet for what kind of snake he might be. I am almost certain he is a DeKay's Brown Snake. He is light brown in color with a light stripe that goes down the length of his body; his under belly is almost white. Round pupils and I'm pretty sure he has keeled scales (I can see it on his larger scales). A black spot under his eyes, darker portion of scales on top of his head, and he is 12inch to 14inch in length. The only thing that I'm not sure of is that along with black spots that follow a stripe pattern (on either side of the light stripe on his back) but some white ones as well. I will get a picture soon and maybe that will help more. If you have any idea what kind of snake this is please reply. Thank You.

but you are describing a Brown Snake (Dekay's Snake) perfectly. They have little dark spots along the light stripe on their back. Harmless little worm and slug eaters.
