Snake Shedding odd

deviledapple Aug 31, 2004 02:31 PM

I've had my albino burmese for a few months now and he doesnt shed evenly, instead he sheds like a lizard. I rub my fingers along his body to gently "rub" off whats loose, but i dont know if this means something is wrong with him or what. He eats fine, he's fairly inactive in his cage, but will occasionalyl roam around, he eats 2-4 adult mice every 2-ish weeks, eats everything we give him rapidly. He has a water bowl that is always kept full and changed regularaly, normally every other day, but also whenever he knocks anything into it. he is kept near a window so receives natural UV in addition to his lamps.

Its probably completely un-related, but he's got a genetic defect in that he only has his right eye, the otehr side of his head is smooth.

so is this normal? is there something wrong? is there some vitamin i should be giving him?

Sounds like maybe the humidity is not high enough. I suppose it could be another problem as well, but check into that first.

I agree with Andy... sounds like your humidity isn't high enough. Try a couple of things:

1. Bigger water bowl or putting a humidity tray into the cage.

2. Depending on the substrate, pour a little water into it every 3-4 days (like a cup or so on the bottom).

3. Soaking your snake in warm water or putting your snake in a box with damp paper towls soaked with warm water.

4. It is possible to have too much ventilation in your cage, so if you want higher humidity you can restrict airflow some.

5. Water bowl closer to the heat source

Try a combination of those...

Good luck

thing is, we live in fl and dont have air.. so humidity in the house is pretty high, esp as of late... I'll try hooking up my old iguana mister in the cage and see if that helps tho. The substrate is some ground bark type thing i get in bricks and add moisture too, and hes in a glass tank with a mesh lid, so humidity should stay in well. But I'll hook up the iguana mister and start adding water to the substrate itself. I'll have to start looking into more ways to humidify soon anyways, since he's about to be moved into a mostly mesh type cage thanks for the help/suggestions

May not be holding humidity as well as you think - glass tanks, especially with mesh/screen tops loose a great deal of humidity and generally don't hold temps too well. If that's the case, misting may not help too much because it will just escape as well. With bps I've found that covering the top with duct tape (on the top outside of the screen leaving space for lights and a small gap for ventilation) and/or covering with damp towels during shed increases the humidity enough. Do you know what the humidity is in the tank?
