I was going to post a pic of my cage, but I think you were right about my substrate not being enough. I need to change from cypress/dirt to just dirt(maybe a sand mix like described by lwcamp) and I need to go deeper 8"-12" just doesn't seem to be enough. This means a cage redesign because I can go any deeper as the cage is only 2' in height. I'll keep you posted.
