Humidity

gvbryan Aug 31, 2004 10:37 PM

I have one Yellow Ackie 2.5 months old. It is in a large cage with 18 inches of cypress/peat/sand substrate. My problem is that The Eco Terra Humidity Guage will not go above 40. The substrate is plenty wet and he stays moist in his burrow, but I'm concerned that it isnt humid enough. I think he actually sneezed a few times. Should I be concerned?

Go to walmart and buy a digital thermometer with a humidity read out. You can get one with a probe for around $20.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

I'm assuming that it is a more accurate way than the analog one I have?

is your enclosure a screen top glass tank?

I have seen the humidity increase dramatically when I soak a towel in warm, not hot, water and lay it over the screen top. Try to cover as much of the top as possible so the warm moist air does not escape excessively. Just be careful with the towel around a heat source, we don't want any fires.

Those gages are kind of flakey. I have a dial temp gage that will not go above 80, even when the air temp. is over 100. It cold be a bad gage.

There are water dragons, chameleons, and monitors in my jungle room.

It's not a screen top, but there is a scren hole that the heat lamp is sitting on, as well as two vents on the sides.

OK, I sealed up the edges of the doot around the cage, and put plexiglass in the vents on the side, the only place that there is an opening is 1/8 strip al the way around the heat lamp shade. We'll see if the humidity goes up.
