They sit in your filter and let good bacteria grow on them. The good bacteria breaks down the waste so there is no ammonia, which is important to a cycled tank.

Go to the 99 cent store and pick up a package of those awful pink plastic curlers. They make wonderful biomedium for a fraction of the cost of bioballs.
