What do I do if my corn does bite?

qime Sep 01, 2004 09:55 AM

The person below got me thinking. None of my corns have shown any sign of getting nippy, but what do I do if one does lock onto my arm? What is the safest and least stressfull way to get one to release?

It will only latch on if it is a feeding strike~ never had a corn do this (ball python once) mostly if a corn snake is going to hit you it's a defensive strike and they just take a nip and back off~ either way a little cool water does the trick. IF the snake actually strikes and hangs on run him under a little cool water~ will make him lose his appetite and let go! If the snake just took a defensive strike at you and broke the skin just run it under a little cool water and antibacterial soap to clean any cuts and wash out any teeth that are left (Don't panic~ TINY teeth, hurts the snake more to be without them than it does for you to take the hit) Maybe a little neosporin if you tend to infect easily~ otherwise you'll be fine.

Any animal CAN bite~ and sometimes they will. Just expect it will happen sooner or later and don't worry about it~ you won't be damaged beyond repair!

Thanks for the reply. I'm not really worried about me being damaged - I can take a bite, and it can't be any worse than some of the cat scratches I've had (ever tried to give an angry cat a bath? I wouldn't recommend it...) I'm more worried about the snake. You said to wash out any remailing teeth. Will the corn lose teeth easily? If so, will they grow back? Will it cause him problems feeding later? Thanks for the info!

Shouldn't lose the teeth too easily...just maybe if it hits at the wrong angle or something. considering a full grown colubrid will have hundreds of tiny teeth, losing one or two won't hurt it at all, however im unsure if they will grow back.

It may or may not loose a couple of teeth but these usually grow back very quickly and will cause no problems when feeding pre-killed.

Well if a corn or any other snake for that matter strikes in defence there is not a great chance that it will hold on. If it mistakes you for food then you got a whole other problem the best way is to hold the spot under water until the snake lets go.
