waxworms

el_toro Sep 01, 2004 12:09 PM

How large are waxworms? I've never used them as feeders - are they bigger than mealworms?

I'm looking to expand the menu for the anoles and am curious what you all use for feeding. Thanks for any input!

Waxworms can be a bit large for anoles. I sometimes get a couple tiny ones that I give them. I also give them baby silkworms.

Thanks! That's what I was afraid of...

Waxworms should only be fed one-two every week. They are fattening and addcitive.

...but I wanted to chime-in on waxworms.

In my experience, anoles can handle a waxworm that would be, were it a mealworm, too big for an anole. Waxworms are very soft and they seem to mash-up pretty well when anoles are positioning them for swallowing. They also don't seem to be as, er, muscular as mealworms...as far as thrashing about in the anole's mouth goes...

I agree that they are not suitable for daily feeding due to the high fat content. But, I think that a high fat content is less harmfull than the high chitin content of mealworms (which I never feed). Waxworms are very nutritious. They can also be starved to reduce their fat content, if you would like to feed them more frequently.

Oh, waxworms, in my experience, are excellent for putting weight on mistreated/rescued anoles.

I should add that I agree that small silk worms can't be beat...
